Summary: The Virginia Tech Carillon Research Institute sample will be a collection of past and present scans obtained from psychiatrically screened individuals ranging in age from 18 to 65 years old. The initial release consists of datasets from 25 healthy (community sample) adults, with age, sex, education level, and ethnicity provided. The dataset currently includes a T1 weighted anatomical image as well as two 10-minute resting state scans which were all acquired during the same session. Some subjects also returned several weeks after the first scan for a second scanning session. The number of days between scan sessions, for subjects that had two sessions, is indicated in the demographics spreadsheet.

The study scanning protocol included:
1. 13 sec localizer
2. 4 minute 38 second T1 weighted anatomical
3. Subject given instructions for resting state scan #1
4. 10 minute 4 second resting state scan #1
5. Subject given instructions for resting state scan #2
6. 10 minute 4 second resting state scan #2

Scanning was performed on one of three different 3T Siemens TIM TRIOs at the Human Neuroimaging Lab at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. All scans were acquired using the standard Siemen’s TIM 12-channel head matrix. The resting state scans were acquired with a custom sequence that is a slight modification to the standard Siemen’s EPI sequence that supports real-time fMRI. Images were acquired slightly oblique to minimize dephasing in the orbito-frontal cortex. Detailed scanning parameters are included in separate .pdf files.

Before the first resting state scan the subjects were read the following script:

“Can you see the fixation cross in the eye mirror? Next is a resting state scan. Please lie quietly with your eyes open and fixate on the fixation cross. During the scan let your mind wander freely. Do not perform any sort of mental calculation, memory recall, or other mental tasks. If you notice yourself focusing on a particular stream of thought, let your mind wander away. It is important that you remain awake and keep your head still during this scan. It will last 10 minutes.”

Before the second resting state scan the subjects were read the following script:

“We will now perform another resting state scan. Please remember to lie quietly with your eyes open, fixate on the fixation cross, let your mind wander freely, do not move and do not fall asleep. The scan will last 10 minutes.”

A fixation cross was back projected onto a screen that was placed into the top of the magnet bore (over the subjects head). The subject was able to view the fixation cross using a mirror that was mounted on the head coil.

After the scanning session subjects were asked to fill out a questionnaire that contained the question: “Did you fall asleep during either resting state scan?” Each subjects’ answers to this question was coded and is included with the subject demographic data.
